Stargazer excerpt! Interview! Comms!
I have a boatload of goodies to link to today:

First of all, if you'd like to read an interview with me -- and, just maybe, get a look at the first few pages of Stargazer, all you have to do is check it out at TeenLibris!

Second, we have some Evernight communities springing up here on LJ! I am tempted to join but would just end up spouting spoilers, which the publisher frowns on, so instead I'm going to simply show you guys where to find them:

New goodies! And it's Friday! The only way this day could get better would be if it were suddenly 75 degrees outside instead of 95. Whew.

Ж-Men...but not the ones you might expect!
This week LJ Russia launched Ж-Men, a new comedy series about superheroes, inspired by the LJ communities dedicated to superheros, comics and cartoons. The title's "Ж" comes from ЖЖ, the nickname for LiveJournal in Russia.

Ж-Men's script is written by a group of LJ enthusiasts who also happen to be television professionals. Who knew? Following the premiere, five more episodes will be broadcast over the next two weeks. We hope you find the series fresh and enjoyable.

This is, of course, an experiment for LiveJournal. As always, we'd love to hear what you think!

Hump Day Hello!
Lately I've been totally enchanted by Sigur Ros CD, Takk. The song below is called Saeglopur and I love the dreamy, sad and uplifting quality of it. They're Icelandic but it doesn't matter. What they're saying doesn't matter because you can feel it.

New stuff over at After Midnight Fantasies and Bring Me My Hookah!

Oh and I'm done with the second draft of Relentless and it's out for crit! Yay!!!!

nephew ahoy!
As of about three hours ago, I have a brand-new nephew! We think his name is Ari, but the parents are still wavering, so we're unsure. But he's 8 pounds and perfectly healthy; my sister-in-law had a home birth she was extremely happy with. In a couple of weeks I will be headed home to give him some quality cuddle time.

Mom, Dad, older brother Eli and wee one are just fine, but the dog (who has been the "baby" of the family for years now) is apparently very put out.

revisions!
I am deep in Hourglass revisions. It's sort of hard switching gears like this -- I had been in the thick of working on some other ideas, and really making some progress -- but at the same time, I'm grateful to get the chance to make Hourglass everything it can be. It's the third book of the four, one in which so many important events happen. I would hate to shortchange a single one.

(Not coincidentally, this book is longer than the first two -- which were, in turn, exactly the length my editor described to me as the absolute maximum allowable. Hmmm. Wonder whether I'll need to make more cuts here, or if we can fly at this length? Stay tuned for more news as this develops.)

I have tomorrow off from the day job. Bliss.

Reading Should Be Fun, People
Earlier today I read an entry over at Booksquare that had me nodding my head - The Reading Problem. I've touched on this several times but it can't be said enough frankly.

Reading, by some, is treated like a solemn communion, a sacred ritual, something done — done right, anyway — by the few who cherish delicate jewels of books. They read with a certain grim smugness, completely forgetting that reading, as Kevin Smokler said at Book Expo America 2008, “is an act of hedonistic joy.”

He then went on to ask, not rhetorically, “Why are we so terrified of calling reading fun?”

Yes, why? Why do we have such a terrible fear of being judged by people we don't know on that metaphorical bus (you know the I can't read this on the bus thread)? Who cares? This is a real question.

We spend so much time worried about what someone thinks about our reading choices we handwring and worry about things we can't change. We cry about how romance won't be respected until we do X (change covers, write about so and so subject matter, whatever).

All this stuff takes the fun out of reading. At least to me. I have enough stuff to worry over, stuff I can't change any more than I can change someone's opinion of romance based on 1970's stereotypes and deep seeded feelings that women and anything to do with women being intellectually and morally inferior.

I don't need my reading choices to be morally suprerior to anyone else's. I just don't care. I like to read! I like to read lots of stuff across multiple genres and frankly I am too old to give a rat's patootie whether someone I don't know thinks I'm stupid or I have cooties because the title is in pink or there are abs on the cover. I like pink and I like rock hard abs. Sue me, think I'm dumb, whatever.

Reading should be something you enjoy. Being ashamed of what we like to read because of other people's issues with it takes the fun out of it. So then what? We have a nation of people who pretend they're all reading literature but aren't. We have endless angsty threads whereupon we try and make ourselves fitter, smarter, more acceptible to other genres and readers or authors. It's a waste of time to feel guilty or inferior and it's unnecessary.

Like what you like for heaven's sake! Read what you like and who cares what that guy across the aisle from you on the train home thinks?

Reach into different genres to see what they can offer you, absolutely. Challenge yourself too. But don't be ashamed of your reading preferences, don't let the haters of the world suck your joy away.

Friday Booktalk

Last night I finished Brenda Joyce’s Deadly Love - what a delightful surprise the book was! I loved the beginning of what I’m told is a fabulous series although apparently one that ends in a cliffhanger. I’ll most definitely be back to read more in the series, even knowing that.

Francesca Cahill is a 20 year old in 1912, she’s secretly taking classes at Barnard college and is a passionate bluestocking (dudes, I love this, I can’t tell you how much). Anyway, tragedy hits the couple next door and into her life comes the new NY police commissioner, Rick Bragg.

This is not a romance although it has a lovely romantic element to it as Francesca falls for Rick despite her growing knowlege of his past. There are moments when she’s very brave alternated with moments when she’s totally naive (but she’s 20 in 1912 from an affluent family, that’s like being 14 now so to me, it made sense).

I loved her internal emotional growth. I loved watching her realize all the people she’d idolized and admired weren’t perfect. It’s sort of like being that age all over again as you get your adult legs and see the world differently. I think Brenda Joyce did a marvelous job with her internal journey.

The subject matter, to a mom who had to walk out of the movie Ransom, was a bit harrowing but handled well I thought. It’s not overly graphic but a child in danger is still something difficult to read about.

Rick is just utterly delicious. I love his character and can’t wait to read more!

Next up - Wanton: Pack of St. James by Noelle Mack

I received an ARC of this next book in Mack’s Pack of St. James series from Brava (thank you Hilary Sares!)

I enjoyed the story, I like the world Mack has created with these Russian werewolves. I like that it’s a historical paranormal and certainly I think Mack has done a good job at writing the kinds of heroines I can believe in an affair with a man she’s not married to.

The details are rich and in this story, the story arc regarding young girls and prostitution takes center stage more than the romance did, IMO.

I liked Marko and I liked Severin. I didn’t like the sister Jehane at all frankly. I’m not sure if we’re supposed to but Severin loves her and I wondered why.

I was glad to see Kyril and Vivianne from Wicked in little glimpses - I like to know characters I’ve loved have gone on and experienced the fullness of an HEA.

Next up, the brother who’s been in Scotland. I’m quite interested to see where that one takes me

Lastly - Blood Noir by LKH

I was very disappointed in the book. I accept the direction LKH has gone in, it’s fine although I don’t agree that it’s erotica, the sex isn’t well written enough to have the story center on it. But overall, I thought the plot was weak. Generally, everything, every feeling, every concept, every conversation, had to be repeated four times. It was aimless for the most part when in fact, it could have been really dark if she’d focused on the whole Marmee Noir thing but she never gives it the page space it deserves and I don’t know why. She’s got the chops to do it justice.

MILD SPOILERS BELOW:

The sex was brutal and disgusting in one place in particular - the hotel “rape” scene. The level of detail in the aftermath was sickening and also while marginally emotional, yet another fight with Richard and an extraneous pregnancy scare just took away from the scene. I felt it was TOTALLY unnecessary. It did nothing but add yet more characters and yet another story thread that got left dangling and left us with yet another scene with Richard that is a virtual carbon copy of the last eight of them.

The stuff with Jason wasn’t bad but I thought the beginning scene where she has a safe word with Nathaniel and he ignored it to be irresponsible.

The thing is, I think LKH has an interesting world, I just don’t know why she continues to stuff it full of characters that add nothing and simply make the story hard to follow. I’m sorry to say Blood Noir was not a hit for me at all

Reading Between the Lines

So I looked at my calendar yesterday and realized Reading Between The Lines is coming out in print at the end of this month!  **EDITED TO ADD - apparently there was a mix up on dates and it's August 26***

For those who haven’t read it, RBTL is set partially in Ireland, partially in San Francisco and partially in a faery sithein (a fairy mound). It features a woman who’s grown up knowing she posessed something extra but was discouraged from delving into it by her parents. She’s in Ireland working for an international foundation as a linguistic and cultural expert when she’s asked to translate some Ogham scrolls.

Anyway, so that’s how it opens and how Haley comes to set Conall free from a spell he’d been under for generations. The struggle in this story is not internal. That is to say this couple is together early on and the threat is to their lives, not their relationship. Haley finds out what her gifts are and why her parents kept them from her and she ends up discovering a whole new part of herself.

There’s magic, hot sexin, action, battles, celtic mythos, etc. I hope you all enjoy it because I loved writing it.

Here’s an excerpt - meet Conall:

Big Anthology News: IMMORTAL will be in bookstores soon!
I had thought this wasn't out until October, but I was wrong!

Immortal, an anthology of romantic YA vampire stories, will be available as a Borders exclusive starting in August. I'm one of the authors taking part, and my story, "Free: A Story of Evernight" tells the history of Patrice Devereaux, Bianca's friend and roommate in Evernight. Patrice's life as a free woman of color in antebellum New Orleans allows her a very strange kind of freedom, one with definite limits and a definite end. Just as she prepares to take a tremendous risk for love, a mysterious man appears in town with very different ideas about liberation -- and an obsession with Patrice that might cost her everything.

Other authors featured in Immortal include Cynthia Leitich Smith, Rachel Caine, Richelle Mead, Nancy Holder, Kristin Cast and Tanith Lee. I've checked out most of the other stories, and they're fabulous -- dark and sexy and full of all the juicy stuff you'd hope for from vampire romances. The anthology is edited by P.C. Cast. As you might've guessed from the phrase "Borders exclusive," you can only buy at at Borders (which now has an online store, hint hint).

You can read an excerpt of "Free: A Story of Evernight," as well as excerpts from some of the other stories, at TeenLibris. And if you want to win a free copy? There's an Immortal contest right here.
